How did you come up with the idea of writing accordion music?

Due to my studies in Trossingen, my joy of experimentation and the desire to improvise, this became the result relatively quickly. In the subject "Composition" I first completed the tasks in the classical rules learned there, then I often made an alternative version for myself, which I usually liked better. Of course, I did this on my own initiative, I always found great fun in it. I also wanted to try out different things for myself, harmonize well-known titles, get to know interesting chord connections. After that, in his professional life as a music teacher, a lot arose from the teaching situation. Often for me the already existing pieces for students were unsatisfactory and not very fun. That was my motivation to write new titles in which the tonal language of our time should flow a little more. This resulted in numerous titles from the lessons for the classroom. Fortunately, this has not changed to this day.

Why the name VERLAG PURZELBAUM?

One of our first editions of music was the booklet "and the chickens dance to it", so the original idea was to write teaching literature for children. If you look at our extensive publishing program today - 20 years later - and see that there is something to be found for almost every level of difficulty and taste, then you realize in retrospect that the naming was perhaps unfortunate, because the name suggests "only" childlike things, which impressively confirms a customer review on Thomann.de, here is a text excerpt:

"Yes - I admit, I like klezmer. In search of a suitable sheet music for klezmer pieces for accordion solo, I stumbled upon this music book with Thomann. At first, Purzelbaum Verlag sounded a bit irritating to me like children's songs. All the greater was the surprise when I leafed through the sheet music for chromatic accordion. The accordionist can expect a music book of the finest for the klezmer entry. In a short introduction, the genre "Klezmer" is explained in German and English. 60 klezmer melodies, clearly arranged and playable by Alexander Jekic, are waiting to be learned and rehearsed..."

On the other hand, the name has something funny and the advantage is that you can memorize "VERLAG PURZELBAUM" well. It is now a brand name that not only stands for good quality, but also for fair prices, i.e. affordable sheet music issues.

How many composers write for VERLAG PURZELBAUM?

In 2000 it was a single one, the publisher Alexander Jekic. Other composers from a wide variety of musical directions also wanted to publish their titles with us and so the number of composers has already grown to 40 in 2020. Over the past 20 years, this has created a valuable network that continues to grow.

What musical genres do you get?

The versatility of our publishing program can already be seen the first time you look through our very appealing music book covers. Whether klezmer, musette, tango, rock, pop, jazz, gospel, folk music, international folklore, original music, classical arrangements, Irish folk, children's songs, traditionals or technical booklets – everyone can find something suitable with us.

Where everywhere do you get your sheet music editions?

We are now listed in many online shops, where you can order our sheet music. The Internet has developed as a very important and grateful platform for us. In addition, you can find our sheet music editions in well-stocked music retailers... and of course directly with us.

How many sheet music editions do you publish per year?

That varies greatly, so we don't pin that down to any number. There are years in which little appears, but also years with many new releases. When a composer offers us something, we check it first before it is published. Since we focus more on quality than quantity, our new publications are kept to a manageable extent. If we were to publish everything we are offered, our publishing program would probably be twice the size.
